Monmouth County Jail  

Monmouth County Jail, located in Freehold, New Jersey, is one of the oldest jails in the country. It was first established in 1683 after the colonies instituted an act calling for a jail to be built in Monmouth County. The county sheriff was established as administrator of the jail and that policy still remains today as Monmouth County has recently elected their 68th sheriff. The original jail which housed only 251 inmates became insufficient in 1966 when they moved into the now used facility. With even more expansion problems occurring in 1990, renovations were done to expand into the facility we see at present.

Today The Monmouth County Correctional Institution has an occupancy rating of 1,328 inmates. It averages 1,100 men and 150 women inmates at any given time. Monmouth County Jail strives to provide a safe environment for all those sentenced there by the courts with well trained staff and an excellently designed facility that uses pods and an Objective Classification System for inmates.

The jail ensure that all inmates receive top quality health care, excellent meals that fit each inmates dietary needs and preferences, and noninterventionist time out of their cells to attend their choice of religious services, educational programs and classes, and other social programs, all designed to equip the inmates with life skills in an effort to reform and reintroduce inmates back into society. They are given outdoor recreation time, and are also given the option to exercise indoors each day. They have weekly access to a Law Library, so that they may research their cases. Interview rooms are provided for visitation times which all inmates are allowed during certain times each day.
