Mercer county jail was built outside of Trenton New Jersey. The facility can house over 880 inmates, and has a prisoner population of men and women. The facility can hold people serving sentences for civil crimes tried in Trenton and Mercer county or it can hold those awaiting trial. While staying at the prison, inmates have access to physical health, mental health and educational services. The Superintendent Labor Assisted Program is an opportunity for low security inmates to take care of county property and perform other acts of community service. Low security inmates may also be let out on a work release program.
Some inmates who serve time at the prison are waiting transfer to a state facility where they will serve out the remainder of their sentences. People who have sentences of less than one year will stay on the grounds The Mercer County jail itself is listed on the register of historical places for Mercer County. It sits in Hopewell township, just outside of Trenton.
Visiting the Mercer County Jail will not rate high on a list of reasons to go to Trenton New Jersey. The correctional facility does not give guided tours, but the building itself does represent an interesting architectural style.
