Essex County Jail
The Essex County Jail, in Newark, New Jersey, was originally built in 1837; it was originally known as the Newark Street Jail. In 1890 the building was expanded upon, using multiple additions, and increased the holding cells in order to hold up to 300 prisoners at a time. The original building did not have running water and toilet facilities in each cell; the addition and updates to the jail did add these amenities to the cells.
This building was Essex's main jail, until 1970 when a new jail was constructed to replace the original one. In 2011 a fire caused severe damage to the jail and caused the walls of the jail to collapse. After the fire, Newark obtained this site from Essex county (from a nonprofit group), University Heights Science Park. It paid $750,000 for the site, which was paid for using a federal grant. The developer in charge of rebuilding the site has plans to construct a new 50 acre science and technology park; this site will eventually hold a one million square foot lab and offices for the foundation.
This new design which is planned by the developers will call for a demolition of where the jail was formerly housed. However, in 2010, when the plan was introduced to the city landmark committee, it was rejected. Therefore, plans are still pending as to what will happen on the site.
This site was, and still is today, a historic site for individuals in the city of Newark, New Jersey, and of Essex County alike. No matter what becomes of the site, it will remain a national landmark for the state of New Jersey, and citizens of this area as well.
