The Bergen County Jail is a contemporary detention facility operated by the Bergen County Sheriff's Office. The jail accepts pretrial inmates, sentenced inmates, and immigration violators. Immigration detention is provided through an agreement with the Department of Homeland Security. The Bergen County Jail currently has the capacity to handle minimum, medium, and maximum security prisoners.
Over 320 correctional officers are responsible for at least 1,250 beds. Officers are assisted by computer controls for each housing unit, a security system integrated into the perimeter, and accessible panic alarms in key areas. The Central Control room allows officers to monitor every area of the facility from a single point.
Security inside of the jail is achieved through the doctrine of direct supervision. Officers interact with inmates in a face-to-face manner, and barriers are less intrusive than in previous jails. The Bergen County Jail earned a 2011 Core Certification for Excellence from the American Correctional Association. The award indicates the jail has complied with a significant number of the organization's operating principles.
The Bergen County Jail meets or exceeds the operational standards set by the American Correctional Association, the National Commission on Correctional Health Care, and the New Jersey State Department of Corrections.
