The Atlantic County Jail is called the Gerard L. Gormley Justice Facility and is located at 5060 Atlantic Avenue, Mays Landing, New Jersey 08330. The jail is named after the former Atlantic County Sheriff, who served from 1947 to 1969. The current Warden is Joseph Bondiskey, while the Deputy Warden is Geraldine Cohen.
After using temporary facilities in Mays Landing, the first permanent jail was constructed in 1840. Over the years, new jails were built to keep up with the growing inmate population, including larger facilities being built in 1932 and 1962.
The current facility opened in 1985 and was originally built to house 398 inmates. However, since then, the facility has expanded considerably and now houses 1000 inmates on average. The facility consists of two structures: a main building and an annex. The facility also has custody jurisdiction over an additional 250 inmates who are not housed at the facility but rather are sentenced to various community release programs such as Home Electronic Detention System (H.E.D.S.) and the Day Reporting Program (DRP).
The jail operations were split from the Sheriff's Office in 1987, and now fall under the supervision of the Department of Public Safety.
The facility provides housing for male and female inmates. Inmates include those awaiting trial, those sentenced to less than one year ("county time"), and those sentenced to prison (one year or more). The facility also provides a Correction Officer Training Academy.
Visiting hours are as follows:
High Security and New Commitment Inmates may see visitors Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM; the doors open at 8:45 AM.
Main Building Inmates may see visitors Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM; visitors must sign in by 9:45 AM.
